Cellular Blinds

Cellular blinds or honeycomb blinds are a very popular form of blind that can come with blackout properties.

Cellular blinds are made of fabric cells that are glued together and when seen from the side they look like a honeycomb (hence the name "honeycomb" blinds).  The cells collapse when your blinds are raised and collapse when they are lowered so that they completely block the light that comes into your room.  They come in a variety of styles, materials and colors to fit your decor and enhance the appearance of your home.  Another valuable feature is that they can be designed to either roll up or roll down.  In other words, you can use them to cover the bottom half of your window if you want sun coming over the top of your window while maintaining your privacy.  Or you can roll the blind up from the bottom in the standard manner.  Cellular blinds come in cordless and motorized versions.  Cordless blinds are particularly handy if you have young children or pets that tend to get tangled up in dangling cords.

Cellular blinds also have powerful insulation and radiation blocking qualities.  Indeed, because the cells are designed to trap pockets of insulating air within the blinds, they result in greater insulation than other kinds of blackout blinds.  Insulation is a serious issue because in the Summer, heat comes through your windows and ratchets up your air conditioning bills.  In the Winter, the warm air in your home escapes through these same windows.  If you want to do something good for the environment and reduce your energy bills, then cellular blinds are a good choice.  It should be noted that although cellular blinds do help keep heat in your home, the openings in the blinds are not as effective as some other forms of window treatments for keeping warm air in.  Cellular blinds are much more effective in the Summer months of keeping heat out of your home.

During the Summer, cellular blinds can be adjusted in various ways to control the ventilation and light entering your home.  For instance, if you completely close highly-reflective blinds on a sunny window you can reduce the heat gain by approximately 45%.  Cellular blinds can also be adjusted to reflect sunlight onto a light colored ceiling.  This will bring pleasant diffuse light into your home without heat or glare.

Provided it fits with the decor of your house, choose cellular blinds with larger pleating.  The larger the pleating the greater the insulation qualities of the blind.  Also, double-celled and triple-celled cellular blackout blinds tend to have greater insulation qualities than single-celled blinds.

As a final point, we recommend shopping around for a higher-quality cellular blind rather than picking the lowest price alternative.  Higher quality cellular blinds have pleats that remain crisp and look new for many years.
